Janet Brice Parker
Narrow World
He said,
as they kissed that night,
“Give me a daughter to love.
I promise that you and she
will always be enough.
If she’s a girl,
she’ll never know
the suffering of
going to war.
If we have a boy,
we’ll have to live
a life that’s void of joy.
Foreign countries
will always call,
and we’ll be
in constant distress,
worried each day
if he’s alive,
no longer at his mother’s breast.
So give me a daughter,
someone to love
who will be a daddy’s girl.”
Little did he know
I wouldn’t be there
To fit into his narrow world.
