Janet Brice Parker
Time's Highway.
Payne's gray pavement.
White lines travel through the center
of bleak asphalt.
Contrasting strips look connected
from a distance
but the monotonous repetitive patterns
quickly break apart and disappear
behind moving vehicles.
Spheres of lights flicker
against black mountains.
Thin utility lines flow with hills and valleys
then abruptly extend to the other side,
crisscrossing patterns of fragility.
A sepia photograph on a sunless day
a moment in time printed on Kodak paper
and burned around the edges.
