Then and Now
I was thirty-one then.
That was fifty years ago.
Those times—
fifty years ago—
were crazy.
Hate and lust
overtook me.
The music and drink
marched to my rapid heartbeat.
I was desperate
for attention,
and I got it
everywhere I turned.
I was toned and fine.
I was torn up and lost.
You went to scream therapy
and left me alone
to my own devices.
I imagined myself
with any of many lovers.
I could take my pick.
I was outwardly beautiful,
but you chose other women.
Your final choice was “Mary.”
I have to thank her
for putting an end to
the molecule
that was left of us.
That woman did me
the biggest favor of my life.
I’m so happy now
with the man of my dreams
who looks at me—
and never looks away.
