The Teenage Vampire

She had a baby
for her parents to raise.
What a “lovely gift”
in their old age.

She lives at home
and sleeps all day.
Has dogs like rabbits
that wander astray.

She works at the Grease-and-Go
for minimum wage.
Then she goes berserk
when she’s out of her cage.

Her five little puppies
spent two days in my yard.
The mother ran off.
Shed just worked too hard.

I knocked on the doors
of every home
in this sparse neighborhood
where fox and deer roam.

After two days had passed,
my brain lit a fire.
Did they belong to HER?
The teenage vampire?

I called and said,
There are puppies that holler,
an emaciated mother dog
without any collar.

I said “if they aren’t yours,
I’ll call the shelter.”
She hung up on me
and went helter skelter.

She drove up my driveway
doing ninety-five.
I took my stand.
I’d live or die.

She slammed the door.
(Rattle trap of a car)
and screamed profanities
from near to far.

My anger ignited. Got
a bit out of hand.
I had saved those puppies
from the dog-catcher man.

So I called her a witch.
She called me a lier .
I called her incompetent
and felt myself turning into
An old lady vampire.
