The Mountain
A place of peace
and lush trees.
Birds greet us
on warm summer mornings
as we quietly sip coffee
on the screened-in porch.
The mountain called to us
thirty-six years ago,
and we put down roots
in this pastoral paradise.
We’re blessed with
serenity in our aging years.
Our friends and neighbors
live in a rustic retreat
across the way
from our cabin in the woods.
We watched their
kindergarten girls
grow up and become
mothers themselves.
Now a passel of grandchildren
occupy their grandparents’ time.
Sometimes the children
come over and paint
in my studio,
young artists splattering
paint and creativity.
Now there’s another baby
on the horizon.
She’s crawling and waiting
for her time to explore
a mountain of secrets,
while the old mountain waits
to wrap another generation
in its timeless arms.
