SUCCESSOR FAILURE

There are things
about myself I fear,
Features I deny
Traits I’d much prefer
to leave dormant,
deep inside.

There are qualities
my mother had
I’d just as soon forget.
Human flaws
attached to me
I haven’t banished yet.

Sometimes
my reflection shows
the self I don’t accept
then I am surely
forced to face
the frailties I have kept.
