Southern Breeze
Breeze from the fan. Oscillating reproduction. Takes me back to the fifties At Mae and Grandaddy’s apartment. The fan staves off summer heat In gray asphalt, Steel mill Birmingham. Mae’s pretty handkerchief wipes her fevered brow. A dichotomy. Color and lace in direct opposition to the downtown sun baked streets. Yet Mae ascends the stairs to put on a pot of beans, stir up cornbread and slice tomatoes for her waiting family. A cool breeze from the small kitchen window gives her mind a sweet relief.
