Lost in the Fifties

Ronnie Milsap sang “Lost in the Fifties Tonight”.
I was there in the fifties.
Ricky Sommerall was in love with me
in 1959.
But the feeling wasn’t mutual.
I was in love with summer
and Girl Scout camp
and pretending I was a boy for three months.
In early September,
I became a girl again but boys didn’t notice.
Rock and roll awakened my senses.
Sock  hops after football games seemed like a good idea.
But no boy asked me to slide my socks across the
slickly gym floor while holding his sweaty hands.
The girls converged in the bathroom to comfort
Harriett who cried because Corney Cornelius
wouldn’t ask her to dance.
Everyone thinks the 1950s were innocent
But in 2002 I found out that wasn’t true.
A couple  of aged classmates told me the “naked” truth.
I’m glad I was in love with
Girl Scout camp and remained
“lost” in the 1950s.
