RECOLLECTION

Somewhere,
down in there,
though numbed by the alcohol,
is the memory of a football game
where we began the fall.

You introduced a part of me
I’d never known before.
I learned that blooming late must mean
the blooms burst forth with more.

Excitement
took control of me
and turned my A’s to C’s.
The books lay dormant on my bed.
Crisp, unencumbered leaves.

We drifted
through that freshman year
and made far reaching plans.
Looking back, I’m glad we thought
our world was in our hands.
