COTTAQUILLA

Sometimes I wish
I was back at camp
Where my only concern
was sheets that felt damp
I’d like to sing about
“Our Chalet” and
really believe
I would go there one day.
To hike the Badlands,
pitch a tent, cook
campfire stew
And relish the scent
of woodsmoke and pine
And the feel of grit
and the taste of it
in my stew.
I want to relive
a warm July,
see Cat and Crockett,
Pete and Ty.
Those feelings discovered,
I’ll never repeat,
Intense and alive
in the summer heat.
Tranquil in
the cool of the lake.
Times remembered
For sanity’s sake.
