BIRDIE
I met her on the set of a movie. Extras in a sea of more extras.
We sat next to each other in the “church scene”.
She asked me about my turquoise ring.
We talked about music, art and writing.
I asked her name. “Birdie”, she replied. Perfect I thought.
A name she embodied and owned.
Birdie was 17, tall and beautiful with short, blonde curls. She had
piercing blue eyes that sparkled with strength and wit.
A magnetic personality captured me immediately.
She was forgetful like me. Lost her phone on the first day
of shooting then found it later in the garbage. An artsy soul mate,
someone I wanted in my life, I didn’t want to lose touch
after our movie debut. We didn’t. Now this beautiful
young college woman comes to visit these old people.
We go thrifting and laugh. A delight as she brings her
bags and tosses them on the bed saved for her.
Pure joy in our latter years.
