AVOIDANCE

There is a greater scheme of things
Yet we focus on possessions.
We’re drawn into the narrow realm
Of trinkets and obsessions.
Days and months and years are spent
Anticipating goods.
“If we acquire materials…
We’ll be the way we should”.
We walk around and single out
Each artifact in stone,
Then feel the pride of ownership
And feel somewhat alone.
We wonder why the feeling grows
And emptiness abounds
When all the things we needed so
Are lie-ing all around.
